Invitation Message

It is our great pleasure to invite you to participate in the upcoming 15th International Congress on Nutrition and Metabolism (ICRNM) in Lausanne, Switzerland, in May 25th – 28th 2010

This Congress is dedicated to disseminating the latest scientific advances in the field of nutrition and metabolism as they relate to patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The local Organizing Committee in Lausanne has made significant efforts to assemble an outstanding scientific program which will include 15 scientific sessions, 6 symposia, 6 free communication sessions, 3 simultaneous poster sessions and one multidisciplinary workshop. These scientific sessions will cover a wide range of contemporary topics, including but not limited to prevention and early treatment of protein-energy wasting, management of anorexia in patients on maintenance dialysis, inflammation and insulin resistance as emerging metabolic derangements in CKD, new developments in calcium and phosphate metabolism and dyslipidaemia in CKD. In addition, this Congress will focus on specific nutritional issues that have not been covered in detail previously but are of great relevance to CKD patients such as vitamins and trace elements in kidney disease, the role of salt intake in hypertension, the significance of uric acid in diabetic nephropathy and nutritional management of nephrolithiasis. Dedicated scientific sessions are planned for peritoneal dialysis, metabolic nutritional considerations in transplantation and effects of dialysis techniques and kidney transplantation on growth and metabolism in children. Finally, obesity and the role adipokines in kidney diseases will be discussed in depth. Overall, there will be over 60 scientific lectures that will be delivered by highly accomplished experts in the field.

A unique aspect of the upcoming Congress is the organization of 2 major events dedicated to Sport and Exercise in the specific setting of renal diseases. The first event scheduled on May 25th will be through the patronage of the International Olympic Committee and will be covered by the media. This opening symposium of the ICRNM 2010 entitled “Sport and the Kidney” will focus on specific aspects of sport competition as they relate to renal issues such as electrolyte disturbances and supplement use.  A top sport competitor is invited to share his/her perspective as a case testimonial. The second event is scheduled for May 28th as the concluding symposium of the Congress and will be a Joint Symposium of the International Society Nephrology and the ISRNM. This symposium is dedicated to “Exercise in patients with CKD” featuring presentations from current ISN and ISRNM Presidents, Drs. Feehally and Ikizler. By highlighting sport and exercise in the 15th ICRNM, the city of Lausanne is the perfect fit with its designation as the Olympic Capital which hosts the International Olympic Committee, its Museum and many International Sport Federations.

The organizing Committee of the ICRNM 2010 is expecting an attendance of more than 700 participants, including renal physicians, dieticians and scientists interested in nutritional and metabolism. Multiple pharmaceutical and biomedical companies have committed to support the Congress. More than 220 abstracts have been submitted to the ICRNM 2010, surpassing numbers achieved in previous meetings. This reflects the ever-expanding interest in nutrition and metabolism in the setting of kidney disease. Notably, we have adjusted registration fees to allow maximum participation to this unique event, which attests our commitment to propagation of the most recent scientific advances to the largest possible audience.

Along with an exceptional scientific program, Lausanne will provide a very pleasant venue for the attendees. The city is located in the Western French-speaking part of Switzerland, lying along the shores of the lake of Geneva which forms the border with France. In 2007, the Lavaux Region, which is part of Lausanne’s surroundings, became a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for its exceptional scenery with its spectacular terraces and vineyards overlooking the lake and the Alps. Participants of the Congress will have the chance to admire the exceptional beauty of this landscape by registering to the Evening and Dining Boat Tour (26th May). This evening will stay in your memories forever.

The 15th ICRNM represents an unparalleled opportunity to communicate this scientific information amongst a highly devoted group of individuals dedicated in the care of patients with kidney disease.  We kindly invite you to participate in this outstanding event and we are looking forward to hosting you in Lausanne very soon.

With warm regards,

Daniel Teta

Congress President
